Living in a skoolie doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the comforts and conveniences of a traditional home. In fact, with the right appliances, you can create an efficient and comfortable living space that meets all your needs while you’re on the road. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the best skoolie appliances for efficient and comfortable living, helping you make the most of your tiny home on wheels.

Compact Refrigerator

A compact refrigerator is an essential appliance for any skoolie, providing the convenience of storing perishable food items while taking up minimal space. You’ll want to look for a refrigerator with low power consumption, designed specifically for RV or tiny home use, to save on energy and minimize the impact on your electrical system. Depending on your electric setup, you might even be able to look at a standard apartment fridge!

Portable Induction Cooktop

A portable induction cooktop offers a safe, energy-efficient, and easy-to-clean cooking option for your skoolie. Induction cooktops heat your cookware directly, rather than heating the cooking surface, which means faster cooking times and less heat generated in your living space. Their compact design also makes them easy to store when not in use.

Our bus had a portable induction cooktop that we used for 2 years. When we remodeled the bus, we decided to add a gas RV range since we were already adding propane for our new water heater.

Convection Microwave Oven

A convection microwave oven is a versatile and space-saving appliance that combines the functions of a traditional microwave and an oven. This allows you to reheat, defrost, and cook a variety of meals without the need for multiple appliances, conserving valuable space in your skoolie kitchen.

If you don’t have the space or ability to have an RV range in your skoolie, having a microwave is a great alternative! As I said, for 2 years we mainly used a combination of our portable induction cooktop, microwave, and mini propane camping stove.

Tankless Water Heater

A tankless water heater is an excellent investment for providing hot water on demand in your skoolie. These compact units heat water as it flows through the device, eliminating the need for a bulky storage tank and ensuring you always have hot water when you need it. Opt for a propane or electric model, depending on your power source preferences.

When we bought our bus, she came with an electric water heater that we never used for a variety of reasons, but that’s another post for another day! During our remodel, we opted for a tankless propane water heater and we couldn’t be happier!

Compact Washer/Dryer Combo

Laundry is an inevitable part of life on the road. Obviously investing in a compact washer/dryer can save you time and money spent at laundromats, but not all skoolies can sustain one. If you’re not loving the idea of having to go to the laundromat, we recommend looking at some alternatives that might work for you.

There are a number of options, friends – from camping washers that don’t require any electricity to mini micro washers, you’d be surprised at what you might find! We’re trying to find something that fits our build and lifestyle, so we’ll be sure to share our findings.

Air Conditioner and Heater

Maintaining a comfortable temperature in your skoolie is essential for enjoyable living. A portable air conditioner and heater combo can help you stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter without taking up too much space. Look for energy-efficient models specifically designed for RV or tiny home use.

If you are starting your conversion process, we recommend looking at mini splits as well. We love spending time in warmer climates since most of our family is in the Southern United States. For us, a mini-split was something we really wanted to make sure our bus had and we don’t regret it one bit!

For heat, we also recommend looking at diesel heaters. We have one and we like that it’s independent of our electricity so that we can use heat even when we aren’t plugged into shore power or if our batteries were low.

Water Filtration System

Clean, safe drinking water is a must on the road. Installing a water filtration system in your skoolie ensures you always have access to fresh, filtered water without the need for buying single-use plastic bottles, reducing waste and saving you money in the long run. And there are plenty of options too!

From a Britta picture or Burkee filter, to hose attachment filters you use when filling your clean water tanks, there’s a lot of variety.

By investing in these essential skoolie appliances, you can create a comfortable, functional, and efficient living space that meets your needs while you’re on the road. Remember to consider factors like power consumption, size, and compatibility with your existing systems when choosing appliances for your skoolie. With careful planning and thoughtful selection, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying a comfortable and convenient home on wheels. Happy travels!
